[Character] Rosas

(Ti sei perso, viaggiatore? Se stai cercando questa pagina in italiano, puoi trovarla qui!)

Full Name:
Rosas Atlantes
Species: Common merfolk, steelhead subspecies (Margens vulgaris mykiss)
Preferred Pronouns: He/him.
Occupation: Servant of a sea warlock, entrepreneur.
S.O.: Heterosexual/heteroflexible
Nationality: English
Weight: -
Length: -
Physical Structure: Muscular, compact, with an abundant layer of subcutaneous fat for better insulation in cold waters
Smells of: -

Appears in: the first book in the Odyssey saga, and also of the eponymous comic.

Rosas is a male common steelhead merfolk. He is one of Seras Alkahest's "moray eels," being subordinate to her, but stands out for his ability to launch innovative businesses both above and below the water.

Thanks to a pact with Seras, he has access to a human form.

He is a recurring character in the comic book Fish Don't Cry, and makes his first appearance in the first chapter of the novel Fish Don't Cry.

Personality

Unlike Sangreal, Rosas chose to ally himself with Seras voluntarily: he has a profound desire to see (and conquer) the world beyond his small home city-state. He was chosen by Seras not only because he was considered attractive by the standards of his species (and Seras desires to surround herself with aesthetically beautiful people), but also for his lively intelligence and his aptitude for planning his and his friends' rise to power. One could say that there is a real friendship between Seras and Rosas, an extremely close and extremely strange one, whose boundaries are blurred.

[Character] Seras Alkahest

(Ti sei perso, viaggiatore? Se stai cercando questa pagina in italiano, puoi trovarla qui!)

Full Name:
Seras Alkahest
Preferred Pronouns: She/her.
Occupation: CEO, witch.
S.O.: -
Nationality: French.
Weight: -
Length: 7,52 m
Physical Structure: -
Smells of: -

Appears in: the first book in the Odyssey saga, and also of the eponymous comic.

Seras Alkahest is a female sea warlock and the president of Alkahest Labs.

Appearance

Seras has a humanoid torso, resembling that of a human woman (but without breasts, although her strong, partially membrane-covered chest resembles that of a woman in a long dress), with pale skin. She has a noble-looking face, with a thin nose and high cheekbones, and two eyes with iridescent irises, but generally lime green.

Beneath her torso, her body divides into eight long, thick arms (often also incorrectly called tentacles), ranging in color from pale pink to silver, but capable of creating patterns and blotches on her skin thanks to her large number of chromatophores.

She is seven meters and fifty-two centimeters (7.52 m) long, from the top of her head to the tips of her fully extended "tentacles," but thanks to the incredible flexibility of her lower body, she can contract to a length of just under three meters.

In her "human" form, which she achieves thanks to the specialized use of her metamorphic magic, Seras appears as a tall woman with long blonde hair that reaches her calves. She has bangs, which most often fall over her left eye, but which can also be styled in various ways. She has large eyes, with thicker eyelashes than those of her natural body.

Personality

Seras is an extremely intelligent person, and as such, her decisions and ideologies are sometimes difficult to understand for social creatures, especially humans. Her morals are very different from those of humans; often, her choices can be seen as cruel, others as senselessly and blatantly altruistic.

Seras grew up alone in the ocean, communicating and interacting only with species other than her own. She has never been influenced by a social structure, but her actions are driven by curiosity, the need to survive, and experimentation. Her vision of life is one in which her personal freedom is the most precious thing, and no one should have the slightest chance of harming her.

Due to her solitary childhood, as well as the power she has acquired through magic, Seras is completely unaccustomed to being told no, to the point that she doesn't consider rejection by others a viable option: those who oppose her are ignored, forced, or immediately "eliminated from the equation," one way or another.

Most of her time, Seras studies magic and technology, as is the nature of sea sorcerers. Thanks to the highly advanced artifacts she builds and her highly advanced spells, Seras can produce results that allow her to earn enormous amounts of money.

Relationships with Others

Seras cannot have children of her own due to a number of issues (such as the fact that other members of her species are extremely rare and tend to attack and kill each other), so she has created "children" for herself by cloning small humans who she claims resemble her, and combining them through a mix of high magic and science with various parts of marine animals, creating a sort of "artificial merfolk" and raising them in the water.

Characters - King Azoth

King Azoth during the war

King Azoth is a legendary monarch who, according to the stories of the Mediterranean and Atlantic pistrix, defended his species' spawning grounds from merfolk invasions until the (historically uncertain) moment when he was killed while valiantly fighting alone against an army of over a thousand merfolk.

The details of Azoth's life are largely the product of folklore and literary invention, and his historical existence is debated and disputed by modern historians, both human and merfolk. For many pistrix, however, he remains a solid historical figure, believed in almost religiously.

He was the "husband" of Queen Serpent.

Appears (not directly, but in flashbacks) in: the first book in the Odyssey saga, and also of the eponymous comic.

Debate on Historicity

Although the Azoth bloodline, with its hundreds of descendants (or so-called) scattered across the world's oceans, appears to be a historical reality, the truth of who this common ancestor "king" was is highly debated.

One school of thought sees the king as a true historical figure, a leader and inventor who united the entire pistrix people under one banner to fight back against the merfolk's abuses, and who paid for this boldness with his life.

Some scholars, however, maintain that Azoth was nothing more than a fictional hero of folklore, or even a partially forgotten ocean deity, later associated with real events, such as the destruction of the Vertical Castle, one of the most important gathering and burial sites for the pistrix. There appears to be no documentation attesting that the pistrix ever had a centralized government, much less a monarchy. Other mythological figures later "historicized" can be cited as examples of a similar process of mythologizing, such as Hengest of Kent, a legendary ruler, or the well-known King Arthur.

Even Azoth's supposed lifespan of over seven hundred years appears to be a completely invented detail, although the pistrix (none of whom, among those interviewed, have reached that age) swear that it is natural, and even common for their species, to live that long.

La fanart del giorno 9. Pistrice (by Samifer)

Ceasg or Mersalmons

The ceasg or mersalmons (Maregens salmo), are a species of merfolk characterized by anadromous migration, that is, the movement from salt water (where the adults live for most of their lives) to fresh water, where they reproduce.

Appearance

Robust and strong, ceasgs closely resemble common merfolk, but lack fins or membranous decorations on their arms or head.

Their undersides are covered in cycloid scales with rounded edges, which are silvery or blue when adults are in the sea, outside of the breeding season. They come in two sizes: regular, the most common, and jack, a smaller version that matures much earlier.

Sociality

Socially, mersalmons are divided into two categories: dominants and gregarious. The dominants, more extroverted, have greater decision-making power and are the reproductive specimens, while the gregarious, although they can still be extremely intelligent, form groups that follow the directions of a dominant.

Each social group (be it a shoal of two or three individuals or a platoon of up to thirty) will be led by one or two dominants, who can be of either sex, although dominant pairs typically consist of a male and a female.

The mersalmon hierarchical system also involves the physical appearance of individuals. Dominant individuals tend to have a heavier, patternless torso, with darker, solid-colored skin ranging from olive to brick red, while gregarious individuals are lighter-colored, leaner, and often exhibit camouflage patterns on their torso and face. Furthermore, gregarious mersalmons, both male and female, are always beardless.

During spawning, dominant mersalmons, both male and female, undergo a color change: their scales take on various vibrant warm hues, primarily red and gold. Although rare, some male mersalmons (an estimated one in four hundred) also exhibit a color change on their skin, which becomes green, with the extremities of their upper limbs (arms and wrists) being particularly dark (and known as "gloves"). The contrast between the green skin of their torso and the intense color of their tail scales makes them particularly striking, but also highly visible to predators. This is why "green" males are so few: it's difficult for them to survive and pass on their genetics.

Gregarious mersalmons, however, remain unchanged.

Dominant male mersalmons tend to adorn themselves with objects found on the seabed, whether organic or inorganic. Many are attracted to human-made artifacts, even those seemingly without decorative value, such as food packaging or floppy disks.

Because they are nearsighted outside the water, gregarious mersalmons often act as "extra eyes" for dominant individuals, scanning the surrounding environment for danger or interest when they are fully or partially surfaced. Sometimes, gregarious mersalmons are even equipped with lenses, either separate or framed (actual spectacles) to aid them in their task.

Although dominant male mersalmons are renowned for their displays and ritualistic battles, in the absence of a female to court, they tend to treat each other with marked camaraderie. Even during the breeding season, they can be seen half-beached on the rocks, chatting amiably with each other, waiting to spot females and begin fighting to attract them.

Dominant males who have good friendships with each other (often even brothers) often "choreograph" their skirmishes in the presence of females, thus creating fights that appear much more intense and therefore attractive. Because they don't have to worry about actually getting hurt, as their opponent isn't actually trying to subdue and injure them, they can better display their fins and muscles and challenge each other, even verbally. Male friendship among mersalmons is essential for successful breeding.

Besides gregarious and dominant mersalmons, there is a third type of mersalmon: jacks. Jacks mature much earlier than "regular" mersalmons and, as such, maintain a very small size. Furthermore, even during the breeding season, they don't change color, remaining inconspicuous. Jacks do not have any dominant/submissive relationships with other mersalmons; they do not engage in courtship displays and do not fight among themselves or with other mersalmons. An adult male jack weighs about forty-five to fifty kilograms, compared to over one hundred kilograms for a full-sized male, and would have no chance of winning in an open fight.

Reproduction

Mersalmons live their adult lives at sea, but to reproduce, they migrate to the upper reaches of rivers, to their birthplace, which they recognize thanks to their extraordinarily developed and selective sense of smell, aided also by the so-called "migration memory," the only fundamental memory that cannot be erased, even with the aid of magic.

During the reproductive period, mersalmons exhibit distinctive muscle growth; this hypertrophy is not solely for aesthetic reasons (although it appears to contribute significantly to mate selection), but is necessary to sustain the effort of climbing waterfalls. Unlike true salmon, mersalmons do not stop feeding during migration, but their appetites grow, leading them to become extremely voracious.

During spawning, males readily court not only females of their own species but also those of other merfolk, and sometimes breed with them at sea before continuing their migration back to their birth rivers. Mersalmon genetics are particularly recessive, and hybrids tend to resemble their mothers much more closely.

Pure mersalmon juveniles, born in freshwater, may stay for a period in their natal stream or swim immediately to the sea, but in most cases they remain for a few years in the lakes they encounter on their way to the sea before returning to their home sea. During these intermediate lake stops, the young initially adopt coastal habits but then become semipelagic, only rarely touching the seabed.

Mersalmons are oviparous, and the female lays up to two hundred eggs. Newborn mersalmons are the smallest of all merfolk.
