Puck is one of the most powerful sidhes, as well as one of the very rare true Immortals. He also appears in William Shakespeare's famous work "A Midsummer Night's Dream", as well as in countless oral and written accounts of British and Norse mythology.
The term Puck derives from the Old English pucel 'evil spirit', a loan from the Welsh pwca which indicated, precisely, a spirit of the woods, with a changeable and deceptive appearance. Often Puck (or "the Puck", as he likes to introduce himself) appears as a prankster, a harmless trickster, who hides, behind the mask of an adorable pixie, grandiose powers whose use is strictly bound to the rules of the faes.
In his true form, the "Wild Puck", his powers appear to be completely unchained by the rules of faes, making this creature among the most dangerous in the magic world.
Cycle of Incarnations
Puck's life is marked by a
cycle of stages and re-incarnations, fluid, but with three
distinguishable forms and moments: domestic Puck, rural Puck and wild
Puck. The wild Puck, too powerful and dangerous, is killed (in his last
wild incarnation, Alberico/Oberon destroyed him) and restored to his
domestic version through the application of a series of seals.
Over time (several decades may pass), the magical seals wear
out and
Puck recovers his strength, gradually moving on to his next stage, the
rural Puck, in which he resembles a faun or a satyr in appearance and
abilities. Finally, after hundreds of years, Puck returns to have
complete control over his powers and it is necessary to destroy him
again.. As a true immortal, Puck does not actually die, but loses most
of his powers and his ability to use them freely, becoming bound to
sidhe magic. So after the kill, the weak Puck becomes "domestic" and the
cycle begins again.
Look
The Puck, in its wild version, is very different from the traditional little pixie, and although it does not reach excessive dimensions, he's still the biggest of all pixies, with a height of 1.80 m from the hooves to the tip of the head, which reach 2.14 m if the horns are also counted. Having changed the "domestic" and "rural" livery, the wild version almost completely loses the white in favor of ginger and rust.
Bloodthirsty
If the domestic Puck is a harmless prankster, who thinks only of having fun by making jokes and mocking people, the wild Puck is instead a much more cruel creature; certainly remains a fan of pranks and a trickster, but the consequences of these pranks can be much more dangerous and bloody. Puck, like many sidhe, loves the taste of blood.
Trivia
- The
Grotesques were originally created to keep Puck in check, only later did
they diversify into different functions and reproduce enough to become a
stable population.
- In our stories we will never (obviously, because we are not interested in copying or plagiarizing!) see the domestic version of Puck, but we wanted to imagine that it is the same as that of Gargoyles. Sort of headcanon, y'know, not really canon, but it helped us with the idea and the design XD
