Nana Panorme is a marine biologist who took part in the legendary Nihil Expedition. On board the ship, she frequently coordinates the collection and analysis of documentary sources regarding the areas being explored; she integrates the results of dives and sampling with available historical data and contributes to drafting the expedition's scientific reports. At the same time, she maintains the blog "Fish Don't Cry," where she combines science communication, personal reflections, and—not infrequently—references to the history of the sea and the humans who have traversed it.
She appears in the novel Fish Don't Cry and, as previously mentioned, is the author of the blog from which the story takes its name.
Background
Excerpted and translated from her profile on fishdontcry.blogspot.com:
"As she likes to say herself, Nana was born as an infant and then grew up. As a baby, she was stunning; people would stop to gaze at her in awe, thinking how cool it would be to have such a beautiful little girl themselves. Unfortunately, unless you are a Panorme, you cannot look like her; thus, Nana has remained virtually inimitable."
Nana Panorme is the youngest of the Panorme sisters. Raised in a family environment strongly oriented toward marine sciences, she developed, from childhood,a parallel and equally intense interest in history, particularly in documentary sources related to the sea: ship's logs, navigators' reports, commercial archives, coastal chronicles, and scientific accounts from past centuries, with a special passion for ancient "cryptozoological" tales of monsters, supernatural sightings, and, curiously, pirates.
After completing her secondary education, she enrolled in the Licence en Sciences de la Vie (Bachelor’s degree in Life Sciences) program at Sorbonne University (Pierre et Marie Curie – Jussieu campus). During her undergraduate studies, she combined foundational training in biology with a growing interest in marine ecology and environmental history, taking full advantage of the opportunities offered by the university’s three marine stations (Roscoff, Villefranche-sur-Mer, and Banyuls-sur-Mer). She went on to pursue a Master’s degree in Marine Sciences (Sciences de la Mer), also at Sorbonne University, selecting the "Biodiversity and Conservation of Marine Ecosystems" (BCEM) track for her second year.
This specialization allowed her to delve into the impact of human activities on marine biodiversity and acquire the scientific tools needed to shape management and conservation policies. At the same time, she continued to cultivate her passion for historical sources, increasingly integrating archival data and long-term time series into her analyses.
She graduated with a thesis focused on reconstructing historical baselines for specific fish populations and coastal habitats in the Western Mediterranean, combining archival records, paleontological data, and modern surveys. She then pursued a PhD in Marine Conservation Biology, specializing in the use of long-term historical datasets to assess ecosystem health and guide conservation strategies. This expertise proved particularly valuable during the Nihil expedition. While her older brother, Professor Seraphin Panorme, focuses on deep-sea ecosystems and fauna, Nana provides the team with the historical context and reference baselines needed to correctly interpret data collected in real time. She works closely with her sisters, Martine, Celestine, and Ionia, helping to place biological observations within a broader temporal perspective and to formulate conservation recommendations grounded in long-term evidence.
Appearance
-Personality
Nana is an intelligent, outgoing, spirited, and approachable young woman.
Despite this, she has an extremely vast vocabulary; sometimes, others even come to believe that some of the words she uses don't actually exist, thinking they are merely quirky neologisms serving as a sort of "inside joke" between her and the person she is talking to.
Unlike her sister Martine, who actually does tend to invent words, Nana possesses a highly technical vocabulary. She is somewhat disorganized and frequently loses her pen (which is why she carries several with her, though she sometimes manages to lose them all); consequently, she ends up borrowing one from her sisters or, if she happens to be alone, taking notes on her smartphone instead.
Although she is a fan of "handmade things," she is also particularly drawn to the early web and personal websites. She maintains a collection of favorites that she visits often—spending time reading other people's blogs or taking the oddball quizzes she finds there (such as her favorite: "Which zucchini cultivar would you be if you were born in 1994?").
She enjoys drawing but acknowledges that her technique could use some improvement; since she is currently at an amateur level, she has Sangreal create the drawings for her blog, he technically is her supervisor, but in practice, he is always so happy to help that he has become her personal "drawing-printing machine."
Although she isn't skilled at traditional illustration, Nana has extensive experience with pixel art, allowing her to create her favorite images—"long cats" (or even "long catfish")—whenever she likes.
She collects stickers, both physical and virtual.
Trivia
- Nana has a genuine passion for the "old web", the internet as it existed before the Gray Era. She loves memes, "long cats," sparkly GIFs, and nonsensical videos, and possesses an almost encyclopedic knowledge of how people used the web back then.
- Nana collects mugs; she claims it ensures she always has one available, even if she forgets to wash the ones piling up in the sink. In reality, she takes excellent care of her mugs, washing them frequently, and even loves making them herself.
- Once, as a child, she punched a classmate and then cried so hard that the teachers, and even the girl she had punched, had to comfort her.
